Ten Great Free News Apps For iOS
05 Dec 2011Are you a compulsive obsessive reader? Do you own the latest smartphone? Moreover, do you have an iDevice?
If the answer to all these questions is ‘yes’, we at PCWorld India have handpicked ten great apps from the iTunes store specifically for you device running iOS. The icing on the cake is that all these apps are free.
All India News Reader
This is the app to have if you want a content aggregator for your national news from the leading ladies. You can customize news according to stories and categories. It is great for those who need to read news related to India on the move.
AP Mobile
The plus point of having an app on your smartphone/tablet, which corresponds to a newswire, is that you will have information at your fingertips. The app is a great aggregator of AP’s worldwide coverage of real-time events. Be rest assured, you will be in sync with the latest in the world of news.
CNN Intl App
CNN Mobile app for the iOS is a massively impressive news app. CNN Interactive Group’s app combines articles, videos, and photos to offer a completely immersive news experience, featuring breaking news headlines from a wide variety of topics, all navigated through a smart and intuitive interface.
Feedly
This is by far the best RSS feeds aggregator in the iTunes store. The app has a great looking interface, which arranges feeds in a convenient manner making it easier to surf through them.
Flipboard
This list cannot be complete without this graphically gorgeous and extremely news-friendly app. This app for your iDevice aggregates nine of your favorite online media sources, grabs content from links posted on those sites or by your friends on Twitter and Facebook (including photos and video), and then presents that content to you in a beautiful, easy-to-read, magazine-like format. Flud
This may not be a great app but we love it for the incredible design and the option of choosing our own RSS feeds that suits our needs. A great looking app but it is marred by a few shortcomings that shouldn’t deter you from downloading this app.
Mixtab
Mixtab for the iPad is new and gets easily lost in the stream of more popular apps like Reeder and Flipboard. However, the makers of the app will have definitely made an effort to make the interface look gorgeous (not comparing Flipboard of course). The app congregates user feeds and has a choice of sections according to your preference. We like it and think you might too.
NDTV HD
NDTV’s homegrown app for the iPad is the best among apps made by media giants in India. This app has an extensive set of sections. Each section has a regular stream of news content, which includes articles and videos. This is a must have for Indian users of Apple’s flagship 10-inch tablet.
Pulse
Pulse News Reader aims to couple your feeds with a magazine-inspired layout. The use of images is clever, and the grid interface makes it easy to skim headlines even from image-free sources. A great app for free.
Zinio
This is the only app in the list, which aggregates some of the widely read magazines (ESPN, Shutterbug, High Times, and more) on this planet. If you are a magazine devourer, this is the app for you.
Conclusion
These apps were selected so that you have a wholesome experience of reading news on your iOS-based device. Also please note that these apps are in no particular order of importance. Take your pick. Read away to glory.
