On Thursday at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Tab, a 7-inch touchscreen tablet running Android 2.2 and designed to directly compete with Apple’s iPad.
Here it is, the Samsung Galaxy Tab. It is the perfect size to carry around easily. You can hold it with one hand and at 380 grams only it is super light. The Galaxy Tab has a resolution of 1024 by 600 pixels, and a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor with 16GB of integrated storage. It’s expandable to 32 gigs. The Tab also includes a front facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video conferencing and a 3 megapixel camera on the back with an LED flash.
Since the unit ships with Android 2.2 it will also have Adobe Flash 10.1, unlike the iPad, which doesn’t support it. Samsung will also install Layar, an augmented reality application, and Swype, which allows users to input text on a touchscreen by gliding their finger from one letter to another on a virtual keyboard. A physical keyboard is available as an accessory. Users can connect to the internet using HSPA and Wifi. The device can also be used as a mobile phone to make calls.
The Tab will ship to Europe only in October, but pricing wasn’t available. Samsung is talking to US mobile carriers so it will most likely be available in the US, but a launch date isn’t known yet.
