Acer working on mobile Windows Phone 7 handset?
18 Sep 2010
Nothing is official yet but Acer might be secretly working on a mobile Windows Phone 7 handset, soon after Acer announced a special Ferrari edition of its Liquid E smartphone.
According to Engadget, A LinkedIn profile of a Microsoft hardware program manager revealed he/she had worked with Acer on a mobile Windows Phone 7 device, besides developing Windows Phone 7 devices for LG, Asus, and Samsung. The Microsoft employee's profile claims he/she worked on the mobile Acer M900 Windows Phone 7 program, managing Acer mobile project plan, design reviews, and hardware verification of Acer phone to enable Windows Phone 7 keyboards, touch, and sensor drivers.
Acer isn't an official Microsoft launch partner of Windows Phone 7, but Acer has released mobile phones with Microsoft in the past like the Acer neoTouch (which sported Windows Mobile 6.5) and Acer beTouch smartphones. Acer has a couple of Android mobile handsets as well, the Acer Liquid A1 and now the recently announced Acer Liquid E Ferrari edition smartphone.
However, this may well mean that Acer were working on a mobile Windows Phone 7 handset but later shelved the project. After all, Windows Phone 7 didn't really impress developers after Microsoft released its beta app kit to developers in July. And Microsoft's trying hard to push the Windows Phone 7 platform by announcing to gift a Windows Phone 7 device to every single employee.
Acer meanwhile hasn't announced its plans on upcoming mobile handsets, apart from the Acer Liquid E Ferrari Edition Android smartphone; although it may be revealing three Android 3.0 tablets in early 2011.
