Happy birthday, Google Chrome: "stable" version 6 out
06 Sep 2010
Happy birthday, Google Chrome! Google released "stable" Chrome 6 last week when the browser project celebrated its 2nd birthday. Google Chrome was first released on Sept 2nd, 2008, as a beta browser project.
Google had released Chrome 6 beta earlier last month, but unveiled the final stable release on the browser project's birthday.
Google Chrome's birthday also saw the stable browser release across platforms, for Windows, Mac and Linux. Google Chrome 6 is claimed to be thrice as fast as Google Chrome 1 at parsing Javascript, said Brian Rakowski, Chrome project manager. There are also other speed improvements in Chrome's pipeline, Rakowski hinted; better HTML5 capabilities and improved hardware acceleration -- mainly GPU.
Chrome 6 continues to integrate Adobe Flash directly into the browser. The browser's also said to have gotten better in controlling and protecting user's privacy, Google said.
On its birthday, Google Chrome 6 also received a cosmetic facelift. The "Go" button is no longer there in Chrome 6's UI -- users will have to hit Enter to visit a URL. Bookmark icon is moved to the right side of the URL bar. Google Chrome 6's color scheme has also been adjusted for it to be "easier on the eyes."
