India to decide RIM BlackBerry's fate on August 30

Indian government will take a final decision on whether to allow RIM BlackBerry services to operate in the country on August 30, according to Reuters.

The government had served RIM an ultimatum earlier this month to comply with their request latest by August 31 or face a permanent block on RIM's BlackBerry service in the country. Last week, in a meeting between officials from India's Telecom Ministry and RIM signalled they may agree on a technical solution which will allow Indian government to intercept emails sent via BlackBerry's email and messenger service.

Now Reuters claims a source close to the negotiations revealed Indian government officials and RIM BlackBerry representatives will hold meetings on Thursday and Friday to positively resolve the security standoff.

Meanwhile, with the government's no-nonsense stand over RIM BlackBerry's perceived threat to national security, sales of BlackBerry phones have dipped.
