Sony revealed an official PS3 update -- PlayStation 3 System Update v3.42 -- which will block installation of applications like PSJailbreak and PSGroove, therefore blocking the possibility of playing pirated games on the popular gaming console.

User reports claim that the latest firmware PS3 update disables PSJailbreak -- a hack, which uses a USB dongle to trick the PS3, allowing users to play pirated as well as homemade games on the system. PSJailbreak also claims to ward off Sony's "mandatory" PS3 firmware updates.

The latest Sony PS3 update also targets PSGroove, an open source workaround which allowed playing homemade games on the Sony PS3. Sony had last month won a court injunction banning the sale of PSJailbreak USB dongles in Australia, and this latest security firmware update is the latest step from the company to protect its gaming console platform.
