RIM BBX: New Blackberry OS For Smartphones and Tablets

It is raining mobile operating systems. Close on the heels of Google's announcement of its new Android OS – Ice Cream Sandwich, Research in Motion (RIM) recently unveiled a completely new Blackberry OS – BBX for smartphones and tablets. BBX is a hybrid of the QNX OS running on the Blackberry playbook and the Blackberry OS, which is currently found on RIM smartphones.

RIM is seeking for various open source libraries to port them for developers to work with them at the earliest. RIM did not reveal much about the appearance and the features that will come with the new operating system. However, some of the speakers at the Blackberry Devcon showed a demo of a photo application, built on cascades framework. It had a distinctive 3D effect. RIM seems to be placing a lot of emphasis on 3D gaming and HTML5 applications on the new platform.

However, there are no details about when the first BBX-based devices will debut. RIM has also not revealed whether the new range of Blackberry smartphones running Blackberry OS 7 will be able to upgrade to BBX.
