Samsung Galaxy Tab: Can A Rs. 2,000 Price Drop Save This Android Tablet?
15 Dec 2010
As seen on FlipKart (Indian shopping site online), the Galaxy Tab price is now 5 per cent lower. As against Rs. 38,000 earlier, it stands at a price of Rs. 35,999 including shipping. To sweeten the deal for prospective Samsung Galaxy Tab buyers, they are also bundling in for free, a Samsung Bluetooth Headset, a Leather Case, and a pre-loaded 2GB card; claimed to be worth Rs. 7,499 in value.
The price includes Transit Insurance and a one-year warranty from Samsung India. Also, note that like the majority of mobile phones and tablets sold in India, the Galaxy Tab from FlipKart is also unlocked. Meaning you are not under contract or tied to any mobile service provider, you can use any SIM card from any operator. Both, standard 2G data services, and the 3G service recently started in India are supported.
This just may swing those who prefer Android OS, over to the side of the Galaxy Tab. Keep in mind that the Apple iPad has a larger screen (10-inch) and is likely more easy to use. So the fact that the iPad is not officially available in India yet, could be a good reason for Tablet Computing fans to look at purchasing the Galaxy Tab or the OlivePad.
The prime minus points against the Galaxy Tab, currently are in terms of the high price, screen being smaller than 10-inch, few Android apps optimized for tablets, and insufficient games to utilize its graphics processor. Scroll further below for a quick specifications table comparing the Galaxy Tab and the iPad, and an image of the two standing head-to-head.

Flipkart now sells the Samsung Galaxy Tab at an effective price of Rs. 28,500 - a hypothetical number I arrived at by deducting the claimed worth of the freebies from the overall price.
