Solar Charging Vodafone 247 Mobile Launched in India
28 Jul 2010
Vodafone Essar has launched a mobile phone which can charge using sunlight and other light sources. This solar phone is called VF 247 and is specially designed for countries like India, where erratic power supply in rural as well as urban areas creates problems. Since this phone is made keeping the rural audience in mind, we are expecting the price to be very less.
Different handset manufacturers in India are already aware of the huge load shedding problems. That is why many handset manufacturers have been introducing phones with really long battery life. However, solar powered handsets look like a much better option. But this is not the first attempt to launch a solar phone commercially. Samsung had launched Solar Guru in June last year and it was priced at Rs. 2,799. Solar Guru also had the option of charging normally using electricity.
Vodafone claims that the VF 247 can charge in direct sunlight as well as ambient indoor light. Apart from the unique charging factor, the VF 247 also has features such as FM radio, a color screen and a torch light.
“Vodafone's solar powered phone is launched for people residing in areas where electric supply is unstable, so that consumers can rely on solar charging to remain connected. This launch is likely to enable more people in rural India to go mobile and thus increase penetration from the current 20 percent. We will continue to invest to uplift the quality of telecom services and products in India,” said Marten Pieters, MD and CEO of Vodafone Essar.
Vodafone had hinted in the press conference that the official price of the VF 247 would be around Rs. 1500. The company has said that the product will be launched soon in Indian market.
