Sony Ericsson recently announced the arrival of a new successor to their slim smartphone the Xperia Arc. This new upgraded device is called Xperia Arc S. The physical specifications of the Arc S are similar to the Arc and it is technically the same phone with few minor tweaks. Let us take a look at what has changed.

3D Image Capturing

The Xperia Arc S can capture 3D images but cannot display them on the 2D display of the phone, according to Sony. The 8.1MP camera takes multiple 2D snaps and stitches them together to form a single 3D image which can be displayed on a HDMI-capable 3D screen.

Though this is a very interesting feature, it feels more like a gimmick. What if you don’t have a 3D capable HDTV?

Better Processor

This a major plus because you can expect at least a 40 percent upgrade in performance over the original arc with the new 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor as compared to the 1 GHz Scorpion processor on the original Arc.

Latest Android OS

The Xperia Arc S comes with Android 2.3.4, the latest iteration of Gingerbread out of the box. We hope to see some improvements in overall performance of the phone.

Improvement in battery life

One of our major gripe with the original Arc was the terrible battery life. Sony has answered the prayers of all those who had complaints regarding the same by assuring better battery performance in standby mode and general talk time.

For those who own the Arc, except for the better battery performance, we don’t see any reason for you to immediately upgrade to the Arc S. And for those who were wanting to buy the original Arc might as well wait for some more time till the Arc S releases in Q4 2011. Also, keep reading this space for more updates.
