Full Review
The beautifully crafted Altec Lansing FX5051 has something to offer that no one has i.e. a USB plug and play without requiring a dedicated 5.1 channel soundcard. We were impressed by the overall look and design.
The subwoofer has two barreled 6.5-inch long-throw woofers in isobaric configuration , hardly seen in the PC speakers segment. Each satellites rated at 12Watts RMS, 13 Watts RMS center speaker and the isoberic sub rated 28 Watts make the overall power 89 Watts. The bundled wired remote apart from the wireless remote has separate controls for treble, bass, rear and center channel with two ports for line-in and headphones.
The neatly designed FX5051 also delivered fairly decent surround sound. The subwoofer performed admirably during our HD Movie playback tests.
The neatly designed FX5051 also delivered fairly decent surround sound. The subwoofer performed admirably during our HD Movie playback tests, reproducing those huge explosions or rumbling plane from the movie effortlessly. The satellites on the other hand were not the best of the breeds. They were some cracking noise heard at loud volume and the highs were rather thin and the subtle mids did not help much while watching movies.
For gaming, the surround effect and positioning were decent. However, the FX5051 are not musically inclined as they failed to bring the warmth and reproducing a sweet mids and highs. The subwoofer also did not really shine for our Hip Hop and Trance tracks rather they sounded loose and lacked punch.
For the asking price and the overall performance, the FX5051 may not get the best buy from us but they are a good buy if you are looking for an immersive movie and gaming experience.
Bottom Line
Costly surround set of speakers which better suited for gaming and movie with lot of useful features.
