Apple revamped its iMac all-in-one desktop line in July earlier this year, releasing two 21.5-inch and two 27-inch Apple iMac models with improved hardware -- the newer iMac models hit Indian shores late last month. The newer 27-inch Apple iMac boasts of speed improvements over the previous 27-inch iMac, and the new Apple iMac 27-inch all-in-one desktop computer still makes a strong case for the ultimate all-in-one desktop.
The iMac packs in an excellent 27-inch widescreen display.
Design: Nothing much has changed with the new Apple iMac 27-inch, in terms of look and feel. As always, the Apple iMac 27-inch remains enclosed in a premium aluminum case with an exquisite finish. The iMac’s 27-inch widescreen display is encased in an edge-to-edge glass panel. And the entire 27-inch Apple iMac sits neatly on its solid aluminum stand. Heat vents are situated near the top of the iMac's back panel -- an area that gets pretty hot.
A lot of all-in-one desktops have tried to ape the Apple iMac’s iconic all-in-one design -- Dell Studio One 19, HP Pavilion MS214 and Lenovo IdeaCentre B500, to name a few -- but none come close to matching the Apple iMac’s all-in-one design. Another really important thing to note with the new Apple iMacs -- not just the 27-inch iMac -- is that you just need to plug in a power cord into the Apple iMac to switch it on. That’s as far as wires go -- just one system wire attached to the iMac all-in-one desktop computer, since the keyboard and Apple Magic Mouse connect wirelessly. Trust me, it goes a long way in keeping cable clutter on your work desk at a bare minimum, and the Apple iMac helps you do just that.
Big Screen Display with IPS panel: The Apple iMac all-in-one desktop’s 27-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display is undoubtedly its centerpiece. The iMac’s 27-inch IPS panel delivers very good color consistency -- with no apparent color shift -- even while viewing the screen at extreme angles. Watching videos, pictures, and reading text are all handled very well by the 27-inch Apple iMac’s screen, no problems whatsoever. In fact, the IPS panel inside the Apple iMac 27-inch display is same as the one used in the Dell UltraSharp U2711 -- so there’s absolutely no compromise on color reproduction, gamut, and contrast levels.
One thing to note: the Apple iMac 27-inch's widescreen display has a glossy layer and because of the huge screen size, everything in your immediate vicinity is reflected from the screen -- like one big stained-glass reflective window. Over time, you tend to overlook the excessive gloss, but it can put off early users not accustomed to the Apple iMac's glossy screen surface.
