Intro, Features And Specs

The new iPod 4G has finally arrived and we are very impressed with its new features that made it one of the most power-packed PMPs in the market.  Let's get closer to this PMP that can do even what most high-end smartphones can't.
Features and Specs
The new Apple iPod Touch 4G comes in three models -8GB, 32GB and 64GB. We received the 32GB model for review. Before listing out all its features, let's first look at its new  and noteworthy features. First, the screen is what really made a difference from the previous iPod Touch. It has the same screen resolution as the new iPhone 4 - 960 x 640 which Apple termed as the Retina Display and is four times the pixel count of the previous iPod Touch, but the difference here is the panel for the displays which is IPS panel for the iPhone 4 but not so for the iPod Touch 4G. But, the screen still looks really great, crisp and offered decent viewing angle. Its size remains the same at 3.5-inch but its high resolution is what makes all the difference. Apart from the screen, the new iPod Touch 4G came with Apple's A4 processor for faster and smoother experience while gaming and using the device., The new iPod Touch now includes two cameras while there were none on the previous iPod Touch generations. The front facing camera and the camera at the back made the iPod Touch capable of many things that it was not before. The front camera enables FaceTime Video calls while the back camera can capture still image at 960 x720 pixels and 1280 x 720p video at 30fps.

The new Game Center app on iPod Touch let you interact with other players in your gaming network and let you share scores and challenge others. Music playback support remains the same at AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, WAVE, AIFF and audible being the only formats support with no options for Ogg, FLAC or APE playback. For videos, MPEG4 and H.264 format are supported and still better, DivX and XviD will play without problems with VLC Player being available for download  from AppStore. The HD video recording option is bettered by the iMovie app preloaded in the device it lets us edit and add lot of effects to the HD video. but the app costs $4.99 from App Store

In terms of overall sound quality, the new Apple iPod Touch sounds well balanced and rich but not as exciting as the old iPod Touch 3G.

For the OS, Apple loaded the iOS4.1 which features multitasking, folders for categorizing apps and many more. There is still no FM radio but it has built-in mic on the iPod which makes it a handy tool for recording voice memo on the go. The application also let you trim the recorded voice. There is no built-in receiver yet but location based apps including maps are relying on Wi-Fi network. The iPod gives you Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR support and Nike +iPod support which works with Nikon + iPod Sensor ( sold seperately). This Nike + iPod feature let the sensor and iPod Touch communicates wirelessly and it records tracking time, distance, and calories burned.

For the rest of the features, you still have the sleek mobile safari browser, Voice control, Google Maps. YouTube, e-mail client and many more which make iPod Touch a multi functional device.
