Asus F80S
2009-06-27Full Review
' mainstream laptop offering is a well-balanced laptop, the Asus F80S. It comes with a standard 14.1-inch glossy screen, with a maximum screen resolution of 1280x800 pixels. The screen lid is black and so is the bezel, which houses a 1.3MP webcam at its center. The whole thing weighs only 2.4-kg, without its power adapter obviously. The laptop comes with two years' global warranty. It has a Core 2 Duo T5750 2-GHz processor, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. Dedicated graphics is handled by an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470 card. There's a DVD writer, and Bluetooth support, but no Draft-N Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet. The keyboard is nice to work with, and its accompanying touchpad is the largest seen in this category. We like the laptop's perforated, scaly texture around the keyboard and on the touchpad: sometimes it's a touch better than all the smoothness accompanying current laptops. Another thing worth noting is the placement of ports on the Asus F80S: they are all spaced out well along the chassis, and some like the multicard reader and Wi-Fi toggle switch are placed intuitively on the front edge below the touchpad. Performance benchmarks on the Asus F80S were good, with WorldBench pegging a score of 78. Watching high definition movies was smooth, and there was no stutter to speak of. The onboard Altec Lansing speakers were good in providing an acceptable onboard sound experience. We recommend plugging in external speakers if you'll be watching a lot of movies on the Asus F80S, though, as with any other laptop. Overall, at Rs. 46,500, the Asus F80S is a well-balanced laptop in terms of features, performance and price.
Bottom Line
The Asus F80S is a very good mainstream laptop with a good configuration and set of features, offering good performance at an affordable price point. It sports the largest touchpad in the bunch.
