The LG L224WS is a 22-inch LCD monitor that fails to justify its high sticker price, when pitted against all the other monitors we've encountered thus far (at the time of review). Since there's hardly any differentiating between all these 22-inch black monitors in terms of appearance, we didn't penalize the LG L224WS for dressing alike. We were disappointed, however, to see that the L224WS included only a single VGA port —and nothing else— to connect it to the computer's display output. It somehow doesn't make sense since most other monitors offer atleast a DVI port for signal input in addition to the mandatory (and legacy) VGA port. Generally, sending the display output to an LCD monitor over a DVI port makes for a crisper screen since DVI is digital. This monitor also doesn't come with Full-HD support, offering a native screen resolution of only 1680x1050 pixels.

We were disappointed to see that the L224WS included only a single VGA port to connect to the computer's display output.

Unfortunately, the LG L224WS wasn't very good in terms of performance. It achieved a low overall Displaymate score, not to mention an abysmal full contrast ratio of 400:1. The below-par report card continued in areas of displaying low saturation colors, gray scale intensity, and backlight bleed. The only place it edged-out its nearest competitor, the Asus VK222H, was in brightness levels. The LG didn't do too well in design and usability. Also, its on-screen menu was not as easy to work with as most other monitors we encountered. The LG 224WS is overpriced for now, considering its performance.

Bottom Line

The lack of anything except a VGA port for input sets this monitor plummeting in rank. Nothing to recommend here: a high price, no inputs and rather average image quality take this monitor down.
