Our Top 5 Winner is clearly the Logitech X-540 in terms of overall performance and simplicity. The twin-driver satellite design of the X-540 makes a difference, delivering fuller, richer sound.
Overall system power is rated at 70 Watts RMS with all the satellites together pumping out 45 Watts RMS of power while the sub is rated at 25 Watts RMS. The speakers also have decent build quality and great ergonomics and the system also came with a wired remote control which has a dedicated bass control, switch for matrix mode apart from the main volume control knob.
In our gaming tests, the Logitech X-540 also sounded fantastic with accurate positional sound and good details.
In our movie playback test, we cranked up the volume right up to 80 percent without any audible distortion, a big plus for a mainstream 5.1 system. The engulfing effect while playing Transformer HD video was great and astonishing for a speaker of this size and price. The subwoofer did its part well, without sounding too overpowering and was tight and quite accurate. In gaming tests, it also sounded fantastic with accurate positional sound and good details.
For music, the set wasn’t particularly impressive though again, it scored better than most in this price range. The mids were crisp but the highs and lows were not quite adequate for our discerning ears. However, they were quite good for commercial Pop and Hip Hop. For its price, the X540 pumped out a decent surround sound which is hard to beat for the asking price which even some speakers priced doubled to it cannot match.
Bottom Line
Best mid range 5.1 speakers with a simple design but excellent surround sound for its price. The X-540 should get your first audition.
