There is something special about the NEC NP40. Nothing much to look at, this unassuming projector nevertheless manages to vault to the top, time after time.

The image quality is quite excellent, and the unique features that it comes with keep it ahead of a stiff challenge from Vivitek. Among the brightest projectors at this price point, the projector has a host of very useful features. The auto-focus and auto-keystone correction make this the easiest projector to set up. All you have to do is point it at a wall and set the zoom level. It automatically focuses for a clear image, and takes care of any distortion. It’s quite magical watching it snap a perfect picture into place, no matter how it’s positioned. None of the other projectors had the auto-focus feature, though a couple did have auto-keystone correction.

The NEC NP40 can compensate for wall color as well, so in case you’re projecting onto a yellow or blue wall, it will make the picture look like it’s being projected onto a white screen.

Coupled with the relatively compact dimensions and light weight, this almost makes this a portable projector. The NP40 passed all our tests with flying colors, and there is nothing left to do but crown it the winner, and recommend it.

Bottom Line

The NEC NP40 is the best mainstream business projector by quite a margin. Auto Focus, Horizontal Keystone Correction, and a really sharp picture at a great price.
