Although the versatile Nokia N79 is a winner in our imaging category, it would be unfair to classify it only as a phone that shoots pictures well. The N79 is an all-round performer and is easily one of the best Nokia phones in the market, if not the best. It has most features that one expects from multimedia phones including an excellent music player and a very good camera.
On the features-side, the N79 runs on a 369MHz processor and has 128MB of RAM. Its imaging capabilities rest on its 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics that can shoot pictures up to a maximum resolution of 2592x1944. Low-light conditions are handled by a dual LED flash.
At the very outset it is clear that the N79 does not have the best camera in the top 5 (Samsung’s S8300 UltraTouch deserves that accolade) but it has a very capable one. It is definitely best for shooting close-ups, as the pictures we got shooting in its macro mode proved. Under even lighting, close-up shots displayed uniform color representation with no over-saturation that most camera-phones are guilty of. Night shots came out better than we expected and the dual LED flash proved its worth there. Videos captured were decent too; they looked crisp recorded in VGA resolution at 30 fps.
The phone uses Symbian’s S60 3rd edition as a user-interface and true to most Nokia phones, this interface is a cinch to use. Music playback is also really good and all of this makes the Nokia N79 not only great for imaging but a great phone overall.
Bottom Line
The Nokia N79 is a candy bar phone that has an outstanding camera and a rich set of features.
