SanDisk Ultra Backup 16 GB
27 Jun 2009
Summary
The drive looks quite normal at first, with its plastic casing and standard form-factor. But its one-touch backup button, included backup and encryption software, and U3 functionality for portable apps are nice to have. Great speeds and being priced not much more than a standard pendrive are the icing on the cake.
Pros:
- One-touch backup button
- Password-protected encryption
- Good file transfer speeds
Cons:
- None
Full Review
This drive takes the tried and tested route – a plastic casing, and the normal form factor with emphasized curved edges. More about the included software below. It uses a retractable USB connector that can be drawn back into the body of the drive with the push of the thumb. That way, you no longer have to worry about losing a cap and getting pocket lint in the USB connector. This retractable USB connector functionality and the design of the plastic casing do feel like they could have been better, but the drive feels surprisingly light. While many portable hard disk drives now come with a one-touch push-button backup option, this Ultra Backup is among the new genre of backup devices emerging, that combine the convenience of small size with relatively sophisticated backup applications for data protection. Its backup features are quick and easy to set up, and includes features like automatic backup, live backup and versioning. The time taken to backup depends on the amount of data you want to backup, but the drive is fast and the software isn’t CPU-hungry, so even as it happens you can work normally on your PC. Each time it's pressed, the one-touch button backs up all your pre-selected files and folders. Also included is SanDisk's U3 smart-drive technology that allows a user to store Windows PC user preferences, profiles and settings as well as launch U3-compatible applications from the flash drive. With a lot of apps now being U3-compatible, you can easily have a portable browser, office suite, instant messaging application, and more running right from your pendrive. Security can be setup as well, with password-protected encryption.
Bottom Line
The drive looks quite normal at first, with its plastic casing and standard form-factor. But its one-touch backup button, included backup and encryption software, and U3 functionality for portable apps are nice to have. Great speeds and being priced not much more than a standard pendrive are the icing on the cake.
