The Xerox Phaser 3117 coming in the second position on our Top 5 monochrome laser printers chart is proof that Value For Money (VFM) when combined with acceptable performance is a winning formula in the SMB (Small Medium Business) and SOHO (Small Office – Home Office) segment. We have seen this printer available on online stores at just under Rs.4,000, making for an inexpensive investment for a budget company whose printing needs are primarily black. Spool time was 10 seconds, well within the norm for this category. The monochrome laser printers we have tested range between 9 and 11 seconds. Thereafter the Xerox Phaser 3117 churned out prints at the rate of 14 pages per minute. We used a 25 page word document filled with text and page size set to A4. When we printer our Text Quality document that contains sample text at various point sizes we noticed faint (but noticeable if held close) gaps in print. When seen individually, this does not appear to be a problem, but in comparison with other models, this one defect shows. Edges were sharp however. The Phaser fared well with our resolution chart test, being able to reproduce patterns consisting of thin lines with faint gaps in between.

Bottom Line

At Rs. 4000 (street price) it is great value for money. Budget conscious buyers look no further. Running cost is also low at Rs. 1.30 per print.
